1999 Most Endangered

Mesquite District

UPDATE: Las Esperanzas, Inc, the neighborhood/historic preservation association in Las Cruces is still hard at work, reports president Jesse Chavez. "Since late 1999 we have made some strides toward protecting and revitalizing this area. We have a solid group of people working closely with the City to establish an overlay zone that will include architectural standards, re-examination of current zoning, codes enforcement and beautification. We are also working with lawmakers to establish some tax protections for long-time residents in an effort to minimize the impact of gentrification. We have partnered with Downton revitalization committee, the Alameda Depot District, Dona Ana Branch Community College, and the Weed and Seed Program. We have met with the City to re-evaluate the use of CDBG/Home rehabilitation funding. We are also about to become a 501(c)3, and plan to apply for project grants."
