1999 Most Endangered

National Historic District, Mesilla, Dona Ana County

UPDATE: In the fall of l998, the Mesilla State Historical District, consisting of some 225 significant or contributing structures, was nominated to New Mexico?s Most Endangered Places List. One of the major threats to this resource is the application of cement based exterior plaster to adobe walls, which traps moisture in the wall and over time causes the wall to deteriorate. Using the endangered designation in our advertising and fund raising efforts, the Town held an International Lime Plaster Workshop in October of 1999. The workshop was designed to instruct participants in the preparation and application of traditional lime plaster to adobe structures. The workshop was a huge success and our challenge is to institutionalize and sustain the effort.
