Hispanic Heritage of Northern New Mexico, now the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area

(Rio Arriba, Santa Fe and Taos Counties)
UPDATE: The Northern Rio Grande National Heritage Area barely missed being designated by the last Congress. This heritage preservation initiative represents a partnership between local communities and the National Park Service, and has received widespread support. Senator Bingaman introduced designating legislationin June and Congressman Udall followed with a parallel bill in July. In November the Senate passed an Omnibus National Heritage Area Act, which included the NRGNHA, but the bill died before the end of the session due to House inaction. Organizers are now working with New Mexico's congressional delegation to reintroduce legislation, and are optimistic the heritage are will become a reality soon.
