Cavate Pueblos

Los Alamos and Sandoval Counties

UPDATE: Following the designation of the Cavate Pueblos to the Most Endangered Places list, Bandelier applied for both federal and non-federal grants to help study and document the cavates. Since then, the park has been awarded over $140,000 to implement a large-scale cavate conservation project. The Endangered List helped the park get preservation assistance because it raised awareness of the imperiled condition and urgency of threats to the cavates, as well as acknowledged the importance of the site to the state and local community. We recently nominated the Cavate Pueblos to the World Monuments Watch List of 100 Most Endangered Sites for 2004, and used the NMHPA Endangered listing as supporting evidence.
