New Mexico's New Deal Public Art, statewide
![]() UPDATE: The major highlight of this project is that the Legislature and Governor both agreed to allocate $40,810 last year to the New Mexico Chapter of the National New Deal Public Art Association to use to conserve New Deal Public Art. This will take place during this year at different sites selected by a review committee. Other private funds have been utilized this past year to conserve New Deal pubic art in Hidalgo-Lordsburg Public Library, Eastern New Mexico University in Portales, Ft. Stanton Museum and were able to assist the National Park Service program at Bandelier by providing new funds to be used for a matching grant with Save America Treasures to conserve park treasures primarily New Deal created treasures. In 2001 we worked with both Raton and Taos school systems to preserve a number of the paintings in their outstanding collections. Our increased visibility in the Endangered Sites program has helped significantly to have public boards and administrations be more open to accepting our conservation plans and finances. Consistently these projects have been taken longer due to the fact that public entities responsible for the public art collections find they need to make more specific insurance arrangements regarding their collections. All in all, the sites and our program continue to learn a great deal about the varied accomplishments during that time in our state, what we still have from that era to be proud of all over the state and how we need to take care of them. |
