Historic Commercial Signs along Route 66

UPDATE: Herein lies a success story for the past year. The New Mexico Historic Preservation Division received a $50,000 grant from the National Park Service to restore ten neon signs along Route 66. After a competitive bidding process, five companies were chosen to do the work. The New Mexico Heritage Preservation Alliance, working with the National Trust for Historic Preservation, was selected to write a model sign ordinance to protect Route 66 historic signs. Part of the project involved producing a brochure on how historic signs may be saved to take to communities along the entire Route 66, not just New Mexico, and to make the model sign ordinance available to all communities along Route 66 as well. State Historic Preservation Offices and Route 66 organizations received the brochures and copy of the ordinance. The ordinance is also available on the Alliance website at www.nmheritage.org
